When you want to build software you usually need to write code to give instructions to the server on what to do given some user input. Maybe doing some calculations and store some information on a database. This process is usually called backend development since this is all done backstage, as a user you cannot see what it does.
This requires really smart people doing all those algorithms and data management so this is not vulnerable to errors or security flaws.
