Are people creative because they were born creative? Or because they develop the ability to be so? Well, it is true that some people have more affinity to the right side of the brain, which is in charge of the emotion, image recognition, imagination, etc, and others (who believe they aren’t creative at all) have a more active left side of the brain, which enables the analysis, radical operation actions and thoughts be taken.

But, I disagree with the idea that some people are creative and some lack it. Instead, I have seen in many ideation workshops that people who “struggle” saying an idea, have a different perception that helps a lot to build coherent and valid ideas within the context given.

Now let's talk about if the place where the workshops and brainstorming affect creativity. Clearly, it is very different to have a physical brainstorming session in a closed room or open space, but also it is quite distinct from doing it on a digital platform. I’m not saying that they can’t be effective and bring excellent results. Still, in every scenario, the facilitator or person who is guiding the workshop is vital to have the creativity flow.

Creativity, as said before, is natural in some people but all humans are capable of being creative if they have a process to do it. When people think they can just sit down and start brainstorming hoping the result is the best idea ever, they are completely wrong. Like almost everything in life, it has a process. Step-by-step guidance needs to be done, so pure and down-to-earth ideas come up.

We see this with our clients, that before they came to us, they have already done an “ideation session” without any process. But when we start analyzing, studying, and asking users for validation, those amazing ideas fail.

My message today is to trust us. People who are educated and have the capabilities to guide assure all people in the session, no matter if they have left or right brain affinity, bring all their creative capacity and also guide the ideation process to a specific, real, and feasible result.

Having this said, I believe the place or tool doesn’t really affect creativity. It does for the people that don’t have a process and expect to deliver creative results only by saying Hey let's brainstorm!
